Hyperhidrosis (Palms & Underarms)

A simple, definitive keyhole solution for sweaty hands and underarms that cause daily embarrassment at work and in life.

Primary hyperhidrosis is a real medical condition, not just nerves: the sympathetic nerve over-stimulates the sweat glands of the palms, underarms or feet, causing heavy sweating regardless of temperature or effort. Many sufferers — mostly young adults and professionals — do not know that a simple, definitive surgical solution exists. Don't be embarrassed; ask about the option that suits you.

Common symptoms

  • Constantly wet palms that make handshakes, writing and device use awkward
  • Visible sweat patches under the arms even in cool weather
  • Onset in the teens or early twenties
  • A similar family history
  • Failure of strong antiperspirants and topical treatments

When is surgery an option?

Surgery is proposed when sweating is severe enough to affect work or social life and non-surgical treatments have failed or are unsuitable. Results are best for palmar sweating. Before surgery we discuss candidly the possibility of 'compensatory sweating' on the back or abdomen so the decision is fully informed.

Treatment options

  • Assessment and exclusion of secondary causes
  • Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) through incisions of 5 mm or less on each side
  • Usually a day-case — home the same day or the next
  • Immediate dryness of the palms in most cases

Frequently asked questions

Is the result of hyperhidrosis surgery permanent?

For palmar sweating the result is immediate and lasting in the great majority of cases. The main side effect we discuss beforehand is the chance of increased sweating elsewhere, such as the back.
